The Delayer.
In 217 BC, Hannibal was tearing through Italy and Rome was losing battle after battle. The Senate named Quintus Fabius Maximus dictator. He did something no one wanted: he refused to fight on Hannibal's terms.
He shadowed the Carthaginian army through the hills, cut its supply lines and waited. Rome mocked him as Cunctator, "the Delayer." Then the consuls who abandoned his strategy marched into the disaster at Cannae. The name became an honor.
Unus homo nobis cunctando restituit rem."One man, by delaying, restored the state to us." · Ennius
Patience is a position.
Markets reward people who choose their ground. We map a theme early and trace it to its second- and third-order effects. Then we wait, often for a long time, until price and narrative break away from the fundamentals.
When we act, we name the trade: the securities, the direction, and what would prove us wrong. Every idea goes on a public ledger and stays there.
